Leg Raises
Leg raise exercises have the purpose of preparing the body for the yoga asanas. These exercises strengthen and tone the abdominal, back, and leg muscles. Those that do not have strong muscles may find the routine difficult but, in time the moves will be easy to carry out.
Those with limited physical ability will find themselves arching the lower back or using the shoulders to help lift the legs. To maximize the effects of the exercise it is important to have the full length of the body on the floor while the shoulders and back are relaxed. Leg raises begin with the legs together and the palms at the side of the body.
Perform leg raises by either raising one leg or both legs. If only one leg is lifted start by pushing down with the hands to facilitate the lifting. For best results keep the knees straight and the back to the floor in order to straighten the spine as well.
Breathing is also important during this routine and it is widely known that deep breathing can contribute to prompt and satisfying results.
